Review

Such a great book! Harley is such a kick ass lead. I absolutely loved her.

Harley has such a rough life and does all that she can to protect Ray from it. At just 17-18, she has so much responsibility in her shoulders and has seen the ugliest sides of life, that when she learns of the supernatural world that she’s apparently a part of, it doesn’t really phase her. Her priority continues to be her sister.

Harley does so much to hide from the world the abuse she goes through at home, all to keep Ray with her. She has to lie and keep everyone at bay, and has learned to only rely on herself. It’s made it really hard to let people into her heart but even then she has a hard time accepting help.

From the get-go, I had a bad feeling about one of the few people she trusted (a bit cliche), and it absolutely broke my heart to have her heart broken.

Draven has sooooooo many secrets and has also had a tough life. But unlike Harley, he doesn’t t have that thing that gives him a purpose, shows him the light. It was very sweet to see two broken, distrustful people open up just enough to let the other in. Draven not only helps Harley open up a bit, he’s also her guide into this new world she’s suddenly a part of.

Harley goes through quite a journey. The people around her, who cared for her, are able to show her that the world isn’t all bad and while she struggles to accept that, in the end she starts to see that. Also that even if people don’t share everything with her, doesn’t mean they mean to harm her. Which is huge!

That ending scene…wow…didn’t see that coming. I saw the betrayal coming a mile away BUT the curveball we get at the very end…soooooooo did NOT see that coming. Super excited for book 2!

In one to two sentences, tell readers what EMBER OF NIGHT is about?
Ember of Night is a young adult paranormal romance about a girl from a broken home that has one goal in life—get her little sister away from their abusive father. If that wasn’t a hard enough task, a hot stranger comes into her life and tells her she’s the key to saving the world from a war between heaven and hell. But the world has never been kind to her, so who says it’s worth saving?

What was the inspiration behind EMBER OF NIGHT?
This story hit me in college while taking an ancient religions class. I was fascinated by the universal themes of good and evil and wanted to explore it further. What if you were chosen to save the world and you didn’t want to because the world had never been kind to you? What if you were endowed with divine powers to serve in a war you never knew existed? These are the questions that brought Harley and Draven to life. I loved playing with the dynamics that not everyone is wholly good or wholly evil and the choices one has to make when faced with situations that come with super high stakes. I fell in love with the supernatural world of demons and angels and warlocks and monsters and a girl who has been broken her whole life—one who has been asked to save everyone when no one ever bothered to save her. The choices she’s faced with are never easy, and in the end, that was the spark when sitting down to write Ember of Night.

Do you have any writing quirks or superstitions when it comes to writing?
I can’t write without a playlist centered around my characters or at least the tone of the book. I’m a Spotify nut. I make playlists in the early stages where I’m just getting to know my characters and then I constantly update as they grow. I even make a separate playlist that is basically the score of the book with all instrumental songs. I’ve always been obsessed with movie scores so when I started writing it was natural to do it for the novel I was working on.

When it comes to authors, who inspires you?
This is always such a hard question! I’ve been an avid reader my entire life so there are so many wonderful authors that have inspired me over the years! I adore Sarah J. Maas, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Tracy Wolff, Shelby Mahurin, Cassandra Clare, and that list could go on and on! I’m also incredibly fortunate to have so many amazing author friends who help inspire me on a daily basis and push me to be a better writer like the awesome Molly McAdams. And very early in my writing journey one of my favorite authors, Kimberly Derting, gave me a ton of priceless advice and it helped shape the writer I am today.
